  • Biodiversity: Chopta is part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary and is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including musk deer, monal (the state bird of Uttarakhand), and a plethora of bird species, making it a paradise for bird watchers.
  • Tungnath Temple: The highest Shiva temple in the world, Tungnath, is situated at an altitude of 3,680 meters. The trek to Tungnath is about 3.5 km from Chopta and is relatively easy, making it ideal for beginners.
  • Chandrashila Trek: A further 1.5 km from Tungnath is the Chandrashila summit. It offers panoramic views of major peaks such as Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and Kedar. The Chandrashila trek is famous for sunrise views, with the golden rays illuminating the surrounding mountains.
  • Deoria Tal: A 2.5 km trek from the village of Sari (22 km from Chopta) leads to the enchanting Deoria Tal, a high-altitude lake offering reflections of snow-clad peaks. The calm waters and picturesque backdrop make it a photographer’s delight.
  • Camping and Stargazing: Chopta is a perfect place for camping under the stars. The clear skies and low light pollution make it an ideal destination for stargazing and astrophotography.

  • By Road: Chopta is about 450 km from Delhi and 160 km from Rishikesh. Regular buses and taxis operate from cities like Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Dehradun.
  • By Train: The nearest railway station is Haridwar or Rishikesh, approximately 200 km from Chopta. From Haridwar, you can take a taxi or bus.
  • By Air: The closest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, located around 220 km away. From there, a cab or bus can take you to Chopta.
  • Packing: Even in summers, Chopta can get chilly, so pack warm clothing. In winters, ensure you have proper trekking gear, especially shoes for walking on snow.
  • Connectivity: Mobile connectivity is limited in Chopta. BSNL has the best network coverage in the area, but it’s advisable to inform your loved ones before heading into remote areas.
  • Respect Nature: Chopta is a fragile ecosystem. Carry your trash back with you, avoid using plastic, and respect the local culture and wildlife.
  • Kedarnath Temple: Just a few hours away from Chopta is the holy Kedarnath Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas.
  • Rudraprayag: Known for the confluence of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, this town holds great religious significance.
